How 2 manage societal outcries

Pro – healthy eating

Earlier this week, I saw a program strongly outlining the problem with people in the UK not eating enough fruit and veg. The show detailed the high percentage of people who are clinically obese and it suggested that eating more fruit and veg was key to avoiding this. So, I went to get my lunch the next day and saw a convenient pot of mixed fruit as part of a meal deal in the local shop and I decided to take the programs advice and bought the fruit pack.

Pro – the environment

I got home only to have a friend rebuke me for buying fruit in a plastic container. Apparently, this was bad for the environment and I ought to be buying fruit that does not have additional packaging. Later that same day, I swung by a big super-market to buy a birthday present for my mum and as I passed the fruit and veg section, my friends wise words echoed in my head and I purchased about five pounds worth of fruit and felt pretty good about myself as none of it had a packet and moreover, I put it all in a bag for life! Saying that, I don't think I have ever used a bag for life more than once, let alone for life! I never have them with me as I usually go shopping on a whim...but anyway, I digress.

Pro – supporting local businesses

I got my mums present and drove to her house to give it to her and after she had thanked me, she asked what else I had in the bag, to which I replied, 'fruit mum'. You wouldn't believe it! I got told off for buying from a super-market rather than helping support the local grocers. This was all getting a tad ridiculous!

Pro – the garden

A week past and the fruit had all been eaten. It was my chance to get it right, to buy fruit, without packaging and from a local green grocer. I went home, sat down with a cup of tea and a banana and enjoyed my smug sense of self satisfaction. It didn’t last long! Within an hour, my house-mates girlfriend came over and she saw me and asked if we had a compost bin. Apparently, I was doing a disservice to the planet and the garden by not putting a banana skin into a compost bin.

Based on this series of incidents, I have developed some key points to help work through societal outcries!

1) Always – strike a balance in your diet. Have a grape at breakfast and a Big Mac meal for lunch.
2) Always – buy food with minimal packaging and have a ‘bag for life’ in your pocket at all times!!!
3) Always – support the local business where possible, even if you have to spend an entire day doing so!
4) Always – put left over food in your compost bin…it’s what separates us from the animals.
5) Always – try your best not to worry and don’t ever bother writing a tedious web article on the matter.

Follow these rules and you’ll be able to work though most societal outcries!
