Beating Burnout

Rating:

Time, unlike money, cannot be saved, but only spent. In fact, while time management courses have been in existence for decades, the term time-management itself can be misleading.

It is not possible to manage time – the same, fixed amount of time is given to all of us. All we can do is manage ourselves, and the way that we ‘spend’ that time.

Read through these key ideas and make a note of any you think could be useful:

  • Don’t fill up every moment of your day: take some time to think and plan.
  • Block out time on a regular basis for the things most important to you: find time to relax, make a regular date with your partner or friends.
  • Set yourself realistic objectives for each day and look back to see if you have achieved them.
  • When you are faced with a big job to do, break it down into chunks and then start somewhere.
  • Don’t put things off just because they are difficult – they usually get more difficult!
  • Make sure people and circumstances don’t ‘steal your time’: when someone comes into your office asking for ‘a minute of your time’, say ‘yes’ only if you have a fair bit of time to spare.
  • Learn to say ‘no’: practise in front of a mirror, if necessary.

If any of these things do appeal to you, you might want to think of making some changes. Remember that, while some things are difficult to do over a short time scale, it is surprising what can be done when we make a persistent effort over a longer period.
