Recycling & Fundraising simultaneously!
Every year, over four million used printer cartridges get dumped in landfill sites. Around 85% of cartridges never find their way to the recycling market.
Looking at life talked to Nia Blank about how Care for the Family is helping to reduce this impact on the environment whilst simultaneously raising money to support families in the UK.
So, how does it work?
Supporters use envelopes or boxes provided to send their old mobile phones or printer cartridges to ‘Reclaim-it’, who then give a small donation to Care for the Family.
Does it help?
It doesn’t sound like much, but in the last 18 months we’ve raised almost £7000 to help support family life through this scheme! It also raises awareness for the charity, as people see our name on the collection boxes in their workplace, community centre or local school. And obviously, it’s great for the environment!
Why is it worth raising money for Care for the Family?
Because families need help! Families in the UK are under so much pressure, especially at this time when increased financial pressures put even more strain on relationships within families. This form of fundraising is very effective, because it costs nothing to the charity or even to the giver! So all money goes straight to help support families.
How can people get involved?
There are three ways: You can request a freepost envelope and simply pop your mobile phones and printer cartridges in the post to Reclaim-it, free of charge.
You can also order envelopes in a desk top display box for your office, school, shop, leisure centre or church building, and encourage your colleagues, customers or friends to recycle, too!
For larger workplaces that go through lots of printer cartridges, you can order a floor standing collection box. When it’s full, all you have to do is contact Reclaim-it and they will collect it and provide a new box free of charge.

What other ways can people fundraise for Care for the Family?
Some of our supporters have done all sorts of sponsored challenges to raise money for the charity. We provide people with sponsor forms, but also, we’ve recently created a space on www.justgiving.com/careforthefamily, that enables people to collect from sponsors online and keep them posted on their progress. I set myself the challenge of walking 100 miles on a treadmill to raise £320 Nia told us – enough money to send one single parent family on a ‘Take a Break’ holiday. It’s worth it for a family that could really use our support.
