1. Check the pollen count. Generally the pollen count is highest on humid or windy days and in the early morning and early evenings. Have a look online or in newspapers to get a more accurate picture and then plan your day accordingly.

2. Keep well away.  When the pollen count is high, try to avoid keeping windows open (in the house or car), or activities such as mowing the lawn or walking in grassy fields. Also avoid rolling down hills, even if you feel the urge to do so.

3. Plan ahead. Some hayfever medications work best if you start using them before your symptoms begin (check with your GP that it’s safe to do this). Also, if you find one antihistamine is ineffective, don’t be afraid to go back to your GP to ask to try a different one.

4. Wear sunglasses. Keep your eyes covered when outside to protect them from pollen.

5. Do the maths.  Work out if there is a pattern to your symptoms. It could be that pollen from a certain area affects you more severely If so, then avoid that area as much as possible!

6.  Keep Clean.  Shower and wash your hair before going to bed to get rid of any residing pollen (particularly if you have been outside in the countryside or in grassy areas).

7. Stay away from smokers. Breathing in other peoples’ smoke can irritate your symptoms further.

8. Stay protected.  Rub Vaseline around your nostrils to prevent the pollen from getting up your nose. This really works!

9. Don’t let pets get too close.  Animals carry pollen in their fur, so try to keep your face away from your furry friend.

10. Don't dry washing outside. Pollen can get into the fabric which will then be brought back indoors.
