Thoughts on Carolina Liar’s catchy hit

Small child looking through binoculars

The lyrics from Carolina Liar’s UK debut single resonate with teenagers, 20s and 30s alike.

After one listen on Radio 1 over breakfast, the driving rhythm and infectious chorus kept this song playing over in my mind all day.  But it’s the lyrics that got me thinking…

The song kicks off with the words:
Wait, I'm wrong / Should have done better than this
Please, I'll be strong / I'm finding it hard to resist
So show me what I'm looking for

Should have done better than this

For so many of us, it’s a mantra that goes round in our minds at certain life stages.  Whether it’s not living up to others’ expectations, making the same mistake again, or failing to reach your own self-imposed goals, few would deny having had these thoughts.  If you’re in your 20s or 30s it’s hard not to look around and compare yourself with everyone else.

Show me what I’m looking for

Confusion and dissatisfaction are common in our age group.  We may have attained a good level of education; we may have made some successful career moves.  But even when we’ve reached that goalpost, we turn aside to find it’s been moved.  Becoming a homeowner or getting married should make us feel like we’ve arrived, right?

Wrong.  Each time the euphoria wears off and you find yourself asking some deep questions, like:  “Why do I still feel like something is missing?” or “What do I really want out of life?” It’s just incredibly hard to share these thoughts with anyone apart from the closest of friends.  I mean, get a grip; you’ve got a cool job/ nice boyfriend/ had a great time travelling across 3 continents or whatever, and here you are questioning the worth of those things.  It smacks a bit too much of depression.

Save me, I’m lost

The catchy chorus goes like this:
Save me, I'm lost / Oh lord, I've been waiting for you
I'll pay any cost / Save me from being confused
Show me what I'm looking for

After all the freedom, relative wealth and innumerable opportunities that surround us, it kind of hits you in the face.  You’re not as strong as you think you are. At the end of the day, there’s often a recurring nagging doubt:  that you don’t have all the answers, that you can’t explain the lack of fulfilment. Many would admit to feeling lost, but no-one’s ever questioned them on the matter.

Carolina Liar have done us a favour by bringing such issues to the surface and getting us to think over some deep and meaningful stuff while drinking coffee or making kids’ packed lunches in the morning.

Even though I’m secure in my faith and belief system, I won’t claim that it takes all the insecurity away.  But growth, enrichment and truth are to be found on the rocky road of life.  Some of the journey is easy to navigate, and other parts are painful to endure, but I’m convinced it’s possible to find purpose through it all. As one Amazon.com reviewer writes, “Carolina Liar commands our attention”.  I, for one, won’t dispute that concerning this song.
