How 2 be a conker champion
You might be under the impression that playing conkers is just for kids. But you would be mistaken.
The World Conker Championships (I kid you not) take place on 11th October in Northamptonshire. So far, there are over 300 entries from 19 countries. They’re expecting a crowd of about 5,000 – so it’s a pretty big deal.
Last year’s champion developed ‘Kellock’s Kinetic Energy Conker Theory’. Mr Kellock revealed his secret to the press: “In the first round I was trying to hit my opponent’s conker as hard as possible but seemed to be causing more damage to mine. I've got a scientific mind and it made me think. I decided that it was better to hold my conker still, let the opponent whale away and then make sure I hit their conker every time but not too hard. It seemed to work and after getting through the first round I won the title.”
At the World Conker Championships, contestants must use specially approved conkers. But if you want to stand a chance of being the 2009 champion, you’ll have to get some practise in first! To help you out, here’s a few tips on how to prepare a tough conker.
You will need:
A conker
A piece of string about 30cm long
A quarter of a pint of vinegar
A jug
An oven
A hard surface
Instructions:
1. Pour a quarter of a pint of vinegar into a jug.
2. Put your conker into the vinegar and leave for two minutes.
3. Take the conker out and put it on a hard surface.
4. Preheat the oven to 250°C. Put your conker in the oven for one minute and 30 seconds.
5. Leave the conker on a hard surface to cool down.
6. Pierce a hole in your conker.
7. Thread your piece of string through the conker and tie in a knot.
8. Find someone to play with you, and get practising!
