How 2 make New Year's resolutions
It's that time again... what are your resolutions for 2010? What will you change? How do you actually make your resolutions a reality?
1. Realise that you’re not perfect. That’s why you do this resolution thing anyway! Improvement is an ongoing thing.
2. Accept that you won’t be perfect by December 2010 either. Don’t set unrealistic goals or allow your resolutions to make you feel guilty. That’s unnecessary and no fun at all.
3. Okay, now you can think about what you’d like to be different. Get dreaming. Talk to a good friend, or get a big pad of paper and scribble down every idea you have. ‘If I could be or do anything…’
4. Think about the ‘you’ of 2009, and pick 3 things you want to be different about the ‘you’ of 2010. Don’t dwell on this, just be realistic.
5. Take your dreams and your ‘room for improvements’ and match some together.
6. Be realistic – if you can’t see the goal being completed in 6 months, it probably won’t happen in 12. Think about the time and energy it will take to complete your goal, and work out if you can afford it.
7. Most of your list should be things you’ll enjoy! Think about a long-term ambition and consider whether you can work on it – learn something new, go somewhere/see something/visit someone you’ve been wanting to for ages.
8. Check out www.43things.com for a whole load of ideas and maybe some help in making your goals reality. Whether your goal is to lose weight, stop drinking so much, learn an instrument, be more confident or get on better with your family, there are a ton of people who are trying to do the same thing. Strength in numbers and all that.
9. Keep it simple – focus on three things you really want to do, and plan how you’ll do them. If it’s to keep in touch with friends, set aside half an hour every week to write emails or make phone calls.
10. Share your list – be accountable. Ask a friend to bug you about your goals every so often. Maybe you could work towards to the same goal.
And finally, remember, don’t stress about it! If you’re looking forward to working on your goals, they’ll be so much more do-able. Enjoy it.
