Make it happen

Why not make 2010 the year that you achieve your goals?

Dreams

Although it sounded like a good idea at the time, I’m already denying knowledge of the ‘swim once a week, every week’ resolution I declared on January 1st. I’ve yet to visit a swimming pool this decade. And the thing is, I don’t really want to.

But what about the things I really want to do? I’m talking about the big goals I long to accomplish, instead of the boring things I try to make myself do. Maybe I should work on these instead.

I would really like to visit South America. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a child, and I’ve been thinking about making a trip this summer. But what can I do to make sure it actually happens? For a start, I’ll need  some money. Perhaps I’ll find out how much the flights and accommodation will cost and make a target sum to save in the next six months. Next, I’ll have to actually save the money! I guess I’ll need to look at what I spend each month and try to find some things I can cut out. If I’m serious about going, I’d better make sure I leave myself enough holiday time, and book it off in advance. If I want it badly enough, it’ll happen… but only if I make it happen.

How about you?

You might have a long-standing goal to leave your job and set up your own business, or perhaps you need to bite the bullet and learn to drive. Perhaps your dream is to have a holiday in the sun, grow your own veg, or find time to read all those books you keep buying! Maybe you began 2010 saying ‘this is the year I’ll pay off my credit card’, or ‘this year I’ll get some work experience for my CV’. Well, what’s stopping you?

Your challenge for 2010, should you choose to accept it, is this: Make it happen. Turn your ‘one days’ into reality. Find out what you need to do to achieve your goal, and start doing it, one step at a time. It might help if you tell a friend about your plan, so they can ask you about it and check if you are any nearer to completing your goal.

Take the first step

Want to meet someone? Take steps. You might want it really badly, but if you don’t do anything about it, the chances are it won’t happen. It’s highly unlikely that the man or woman of your dreams will be sitting on your sofa when you get home from work. Start accepting invitations to parties where you won’t know many people, take up a new hobby, or join a club… find ways to meet new people.

Need to get a job? Start with your C.V. – you can update it this week. Next week, look on the internet and local papers for jobs in your area, and write down 5 that you can apply for. Apply for them all by the end of the month. The goal might still appear big and scary, but if you do these three things, you’re already halfway there!

The things that really matter to us are usually within our grasp, but they often don’t happen simply because we don’t make the effort to work towards them, or we’re too afraid of failing to try in the first place. Most of our goals and dreams are achievable. So this year, pick one thing you’ve dreamed of doing, work out what you need to do get there, and then take the first step. When you’ve done that, take the next step… and keep going until you’ve achieved your goal. 2010 could become the year you make things happen. Good luck!
