How 2 hijack valentine's day
Rating:
Valentine’s day is supposed to be a celebration of love – but the usual expressions offer us a very narrow view of what love is.
However, there are ways to hijack this over-commercialised festival and use the day as an excuse to express your love in original ways. You could even make it an exercise in originality. Here are a few ideas:
- Tell someone you love them – through the medium of vegetables. Carve your initials in a swede, or spell out your message in sprouts or peas.
- Facebook your friends to tell them why you appreciate them. Give specific reasons, and write it on their wall or in your status. For example: ‘Louise is brilliant because her terrible impression of an Irish accent cracks me up.’
- Steer clear of obvious symbols. Boycott fluffy hearts, flowers, chocolates, etc, and choose gifts that you know your friend, relative or partner will really appreciate. Use your imagination… you can do it!
- Declare your love with enthusiasm. Write it on your t-shirt, your face or your screensaver… and tell everyone. Ideas include: ‘I love green things’, ‘I love Delia Smith’, ‘I love organising my sock drawer’, ‘I love crumpets’, etc.
- Don’t just say it – show it. Cook dinner for your mum. Clean the bathroom. Do your friend’s dishes. Flowers say ‘I thought of you’. But a carefully considered act of kindness might provoke someone to say ‘wow, you really must love me!’
