Pastures New
I have a friend who just upped sticks and moved to Sheffield. It was a bit of a surprise.
Not that I have anything against Sheffield. Nice place. Lots to see. Several football and rugby clubs. It was more the upping and leaving that bugged me than the fact he went to Sheffield, mainly because he left a hole in our five-a-side team.
I guess that moving around is more of an option for everyone these days. A rundown of my school friends on Facebook is a veritable geography lesson: London, Leeds, Leicester, Lille. And that's just the L's. People I was at school with now live on four different continents outside of Europe.
There's something attractive about disappearing to a new city (or continent). A chance to reinvent yourself, find a culture you fit in with better, experience new things, get a better job.
And some of us are more restless wanderers than others. My friend, newly ensconced in an apartment overlooking a large section of Sheffield, told me it was just time to move on.
The great thing for our generation is that we are free to do that.
