Its Hippo Time!
I was flicking through a book called S.U.M.O Your Relationships and I noticed this fantastically-named concept: Hippo Time.
The basic idea is that happy hippos are hippos that have time to ‘wallow’ in the mud. They cool down, they feel less stressed, and, of course, it does their skin no end of good. If they don’t get a good wallow, they get too hot, stressed, and grouchy. And you don’t want to be hanging with a grouchy hippo. (Plus their skin gets flaky and sore, exacerbating the problem.)
The S.U.M.O book goes on to ask how many times do we over-react to a comment or situation because we’ve overheated and we need to cool down? If we’re stressed do we need to find some wallowing time? Maybe a lunch out instead of at your desk, or unwind using music, exercise, or escape to find some silence.
It’s sound advice. So now when I feel like I’m turning into a grouchier hippo than normal, I’m going to make sure I book in some quality wallowing time.
