Smile and say thank you
You know sometimes someone gives you a gift and you’re not sure what to make of it. Recently a mate of mine, Gloss, gave me a wind-up beaver. You turn the little handle, and it flaps along through the water, on its back, pounding at the clam shell on it’s belly, as beavers are wont to do when they fancy eating some tasty clam, apparently.
It’s a random gift, but apparently Gloss saw it and thought of me. I seem to get a lot of those sort of gifts - “I saw this and I had to get it for you.” The list of things I’ve been given which fall into that category include a desk calendar depicting Jesus participating in extreme sports, a barrel of “Toxic Sludge”, an out-of-date army rations pack, and a t-shirt of Miss Piggy parodying Baywatch-era Pamela Anderson.
So what conclusions can I draw from all these gifts which were “so you”. Obviously I’m a complex character (or perhaps a character with a complex?). Maybe I should consider it an opportunity for me to learn discretion - to smile and say thanks when inwardly I’m thinking ‘Eh?’
Or perhaps I should just be grateful I’ve got friends who like to buy me stuff (and I am!). It’s fun not to know what random gift I may be given tomorrow, although I doubt there will be few gifts better than a wind-up beaver.
