Fix you
That Coldplay song ‘Fix you’… if ever there was a song title which summed up the mistakes men make when relating to women, that’s it.
I was recently watching one of those odd American sitcoms which tip up on digital channels and nowhere else, and one of the main characters was explaining to his wife why he had to ‘fix’ the problems she was talking to him about.
“You don’t take your car to a mechanic, tell him it’s broken, but then say ‘Don’t fix it, just listen and give me a hug’!”
I’ve learned through trial and error (a lot of error!) that a useful way to cross that male-female listen-but-don’t-try-to-solve-the-problem divide is to actually ask ‘Do you want to hear what I think you should do?’ And if I get ‘No’ (or a very reluctant “s’pose so”) for an answer, then that frees me up from being Mr Fix-It.
