The Christmas letter
I always thought writing a Christmas letter was a bit of a waste of time, but gradually as cousins, schoolmates, and university friends have moved to different countries (and continents), I’ve started writing one. Well, actually Kath writes it and I suggest things for inclusion, which may or may not be rejected as too frivolous. Too frivolous? It’s Christmas! But I do see what you mean…
After all, Christmas is catch-up time. Like when the card arrives from longstanding friends with an additional name on the card - ooh, they’ve had a baby. Although I do wonder if I’m a bad friend for not even knowing they were expecting. And then there are the other cards, when a couple you’ve known for years send you separate cards, and one of them includes a change of address...
In fact, this is the only time of year I’m in contact with over half the people in my address book. And, yes, I’m sure they’re interested in what we’ve gotten up to over the past year, but realistically I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because human beings are naturally curious creatures.
Or maybe we don’t quite want to admit that our friendships have run their course and so we prolong them with the once a year yuletide epistle?
