Mr un-green fingers
I’m ambivalent about plants. I think it stems from reading The Day of the Triffids when I was about 13. Every since then I’ve been cautious when approaching large bushes.
I also don’t have much luck with plants. House plants tend to wither and die, mainly from neglect, if I’m honest. My back yard varies from being an overgrown jungle to a close-cropped wasteland… which will quickly grow back to jungle.
One or two struggling flowers that were optimistically planted a couple of years back still do battle against the weeds. Some of the flowers have even become uncontrollable brightly-coloured weeds themselves, and now get hacked back along with everything else in the annual slash and burn. (Well, slash and trip to the tip.)
Thing is, I’d like to have a nice garden, but I’m not a good gardener. I don’t have the passion for it. Personally, I think gravel or bark chippings can be just as pretty. And a lot less time-consuming. I just don’t have the oomph to go down to B&Q and load up my car with the stuff.
Meanwhile the weeds just keep on growing out there – brambles, buddleia, ivy, bizarre reedy things with suckers, dandelions, and so on. I’d go out and sort it, but I’m afraid I might not make it back safely indoors. (Last time I went out there I swear I even spotted a triffid - those things are real I tell you!)
