There's a local house which has become a legend in my hometown as "the house of tat". People slow down as they drive past it to gawp in awestruck wonder at how much tinsel they have draped over the life-size nativity scene in the garden (complete with Santa Claus). They have lights in the shape of reindeer, with little legs that flicker on and off in a fit-inducing attempt at stop-motion animation. And it plays Christmas songs, if you slow the car down long enough or stop and get out to look at it.
I'm sure the erstwhile Christmas decorator, who I always picture as a cross between Forrest Gump and Norman Bates, loves the attention. Maybe he's delusional and he thinks people are stopping because they've never seen anything so cool. I don't know, and I'm too scared to go and ask.
But at least he hasn't got any of the Santa's-hanging-off-the-lamp-posts which the council decided to put up a few years ago, making the town centre look like it was the haunt of a Santa-lynching maniac. Now that was scary!
