Stopgap and fullstop jobs
I have a friend who was recently made redundant. Like many other people at the moment she is now ‘looking for work’.
But she is hesitant to take the first job that comes along, even though she is strapped for cash. Her reasoning is that “I’ll kid myself that if I get a stopgap job, I will then carry on looking for a new job. I won’t. I’ll settle and stay in the naff job because it’s easier.”
She thinks the urgency of not having a job will push her to get the right job and to keep applying. I see her point. It’s very easy, if you’re working, to think ‘I don’t need to worry too much about getting a new job’, and then before you know it a year or so has passed and you’re stuck in a rut you find depressing, or even hate.
If you have the option, the opportunity to hang on and wait for the right job is a real gift. Of course some of us have a mortgage to pay and taking any job is a necessity. Hopefully, that necessary stopgap won’t become a full stop.
