Future tense

Occasionally I do something stupid and read an ‘end of the world’ novel. You know the kind of thing. A comet hits earth and the survivors have to band together as society collapses.

It always makes me think ‘What would I do?’ and then I begin to think about digging a bunker and stockpiling food and supplies and maybe weapons. Just in case.

My current abode is just 6ft above sea level. I ought to move to a mountainous region for when the ice caps melt and humanity has to flee to high ground (as in The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham). But not too high because the shockwaves from nuclear bombs or asteroid strikes will flatten most buildings. It ought to be off the grid for when the grid goes offline, but not too far off the grid because otherwise how will I know the end is coming. And it needs to be defensible like a bunker, but with lots of sunlight for the intensive hydroponic garden. And so on…

And then I worry that I’m worrying about the wrong things. Maybe I should be looking more closely at my pension or trying to find the best deal on a mortgage, or considering my career more carefully. That’s a bit more mundane than fretting over what I would do if a deadly virus turned everyone else into zombies.

But no less important.
