I’ve just spent a whole weekend without turning on my computer. No email, no Facebook, no blogging, no nothing.
I wasn’t ill. I wasn’t travelling. I wasn’t doing a ‘sponsored no computer weekend’. I just had no need to turn on the computer.
And you know what? I enjoyed it. I enjoyed having the time to unwind, relax, and even have a three hour nap on the Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed Saturday night chilli night and watching a fun movie. I enjoyed living life off-screen.
Truth is, there are very few reasons why I ‘need’ to turn on the computer on a weekend. Most of the time I do it because I’m bored, or I’m in an ongoing argument on a messageboard with someone and I want to see how they’ve reacted, or I’ve run out of time in the week and need to write something for a client.
Those aren’t really very good reasons, when I think about it.
Here’s a challenge. How long can you go without your virtual fix?
