Love is patient? Haven't got time for that...
One of the things that always gets read out at weddings is a list of things 'love' is - you know the one, patient, kind, not self-seeking and so on.
I understand the need to be kind, but patient? Does love really have to mean being patient with someone? Hmm, the longer I'm in a relationship, the more I think it does.
It's easy to reach a point where you have no time for each other. I know I'm guilty of tuning out when Kath tells me about her day, particularly if it sounds a lot like any other day. I nod and mumble 'yes, uh huh, right' but don't really listen.
When did I get so impatient that I can't spare five minutes listening?
One of the key things relationships gurus tell you is to try and avoid using the words 'always' and 'never' - "You always take forever to get ready!" "You never listen to me!" - with your partner. My thought on that is using 'always' or 'never' shows how exasperated you are - how impatient you have become. And of course a statement like that usually starts an argument, which just increases your feelings of frustration, and gets you in a bad mood. Impatience is self-damaging too.
I don't think it's too late to develop patience. But I need to learn how to be more patient fast! (If I can...)
