When technogeeks rule the world
I have recently decided I need to buy a laptop, but I’m increasingly stressed by the thought that I might end up buying a duff one. Worse than that, I’m worried that when I show it to my technogeek friends they will snort derisively at the under-powered, not-that-hip machine I have chosen.
There are literally hundreds of different machines to choose from, with a variety of bells, whistles, USB ports, and graphics options. I don’t know which one is best, and I don’t know whether the ‘best’ one would be best for me anyhow.
A solution is to ask my technogeek friends to help me pick one, but admitting a lack of knowledge to the technogeeks is just as likely to earn me derisive snorts and make me feel small and ignorant.
My plan is to buy a laptop and then deny all knowledge. When my technogeek friends come round I’ll hide it under a sofa cushion. If someone sees me with it, I’ll make something up like that it’s a works issue one. That way I can enjoy myself without worrying what other people think of me. Sure, it’s inconvenient, but I can live with the inconvenience more than my insecurity.
