What's new about this year?
2008 is a week old. And yet it seems very much the same as 2007. Am I the only one who finds New Year artificial. It's a bit of an arbitrary celebration really. A 'year' (one trip round the sun) could start at any time. So why January?
We set lots of arbitrary deadlines on ourselves. Things to do before we're thirty, forty, fifty; places to see before we die (bit of a serious deadline that one). The thing is I'm pretty sure when we stick deadlines on something it becomes a chore - a source of stress instead of a source of joy.
That's certainly the line I'm taking with my new boss. I'm much more productive when I'm happily doing something I enjoy. Deadlines take away my joy. Hence I'm less productive. That means that when someone wants something done, they're better off not giving me a time limit. I'm bound to do it more quickly then!
And the things I want to do for me? I'll probably be more likely to acheive them if I don't set myself an arbitrary time to do it by!
