Status Dissatisfaction
A few weeks ago one of my good friends posted this as her Facebook status: “[blank] is thinking that to be happy she needs to lose weight, have a make-over and buy a Gaultier dress. Basically a complete reinvention.”
I felt a bit upset about that. Here is someone who is lovely, caring, intelligent and already pretty good-looking in my book, saying they want to change everything superficial about themselves, as if that’s what matters. (And we’re not talking teenage angst here, she’s 28!)
I understand that feeling of looking in the mirror and being underwhelmed by your reflection. I realise that there’s more pressure to look ‘perfect’ if you’re a girl (although, believe me, it’s not too easy for guys either). But, what if you managed to make all those changes and still didn’t like what you see?
I texted her and said “You’re perfect just the way you are and don’t let anyone tell you different.” (I then added that I wasn’t drunk while composing my text, because it sounded a bit soppy for a text from me.)
Sometimes all you can do is tell people how you like them more then they seem to like themselves.
You can become my friend on Facebook too. (But I can't promise that you'll get soppy texts.)
