Resolve to have fun
One problem with New Year’s resolutions is that they are usually resolutions to do things that we don’t want to do, like diet or exercise. And that is why 99% of the time we fail at them.
So this year I’m turning it on it’s head and only resolving to do things that I want to do – like make more time for me and my other half. I want us to hang out and have fun, but if that’s going to happen I’ve got to make it happen. So, my resolution is to deliberately make time for us to have fun.
There are loads of other positive resolutions to make. For example, wherever I go there are people who moan about the situation – in work, at the footie, at various clubs I go to. But they never change anything. So I see a good resolution: to do less moaning and more doing. Or, to put it another way, care enough to change things.
And I’m going to resolve to read more books. I like reading, but I often feel guilty that I should be doing something more ‘important’. But actually, for a writer, reading time is important. So, there you go – another positive resolution that I’m likely to keep.
I think the key to all this is giving myself permission to do the things I enjoy. Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll find a style of exercise I enjoy and resolve to do that!
