Our best laid plans
Today, thousands of people who planned to get on a plane in the UK have instead found themselves grounded. The volcanic eruption in Iceland and the cloud of ash across northwest Europe has wreaked havoc with our travel plans. And there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it. Still, at least we don’t live in Iceland, where they can’t even go outside this week without getting a face-full of ash. Things could be worse.
It got me thinking how I would react if I had plans to fly today. Would I be angry at the airline? How long would my patience last with no information? Would I stress about getting to my destination or just wait until it all blows over? The way we respond to problems is quite telling.
More than anything, it reminds me that although I like to feel that I am in control of my life, there are some things I am powerless to change. Perhaps it's wise to hold onto things lightly, to be willing to change and adapt should circumstances call for it. Because you never know when a cancelled train, a redundancy, a broken leg or a huge cloud of ash could come along and mess with your plans.
