Dem phones...
I just read an article claiming that an estimated 14% of UK adults don’t own a mobile phone. Apparently there ARE people around who have broken the hold of constant tele-communication. They rave about the freedom of being unattainable. Obviously, this makes it difficult if you have to urgently get a message to someone, but in my experience, most of these so-called emergencies tend to resolve themselves after a while.
The last experience my Grandpa had with a mobile phone was when he took one with him to meet me at the bus station. My bus was delayed, so I called my Grandma who tried to pass on the message to him en-route. He heard the machine making funny noises and pulled over to try to get to the message but couldn’t make it work. So he turned around, drove to a friend’s house and borrowed their landline to call his wife to get first hand the message that was waiting in his voicemail.
On the weekend, my Grandpa asked me to find him a cheap mobile phone for his upcoming hospital stay. His specifications were, and I quote: ‘Just the basics, I don’t want any of that texting nonsense’.
