The finer things in life

Some people might think of caviar, expensive champagne, holidays in the sun and cashmere soft slippers.

To me, the finer things in life are usually the simple things, too. Fresh bread and mature cheddar. A pint of ale. A couple of hours with a really good book, without that guilty ‘I should be getting on with something’ feeling. And, of course, great music.

My favourite thing to do is to hang out with people I love, so a good ol’ catch up with an old friend, or a summer evening barbeque, would also be at the top of my list.

The thing about favourite things is that they’re worth a bit of sacrifice. To put my money where my passion is, I’ll fork out to see a talented musician. And I’ll spend time, that great test of priorities, on the things that are most important to me.

I almost feel cheated when I let my time and money slip away. Obviously there are essentials like rent, tax, and hours spent at work. But when I spend a tenner on jeans I won’t wear because they’re a bargain, or I zonk out in front of the telly for 3 hours and then realise my evening’s gone, I wish I’d done something better. After all, life is short. Carpe Diem, and all that.
