The Sun's out...and so are my toes

There’s something about Brits and sunshine. The temperature rises a few degrees, the clouds go for a sleep behind the horizon, and all of a sudden, life in the UK doesn’t seem so bad after all. The winter is behind us, the days are getting longer, so there’s nothing else for it but to… head to the park.

As a country bumpkin, I’ve always been amused by the city-dweller’s park exodus. It’s perhaps unsurprising that as I turned up with my fiancé to the grassy space between two busy main roads, I realised that the entire population had had the same idea. I found myself longing for the days of my youth… jumping off the school bus, into the Londis, and back out onto the beach with a ‘twister’ already dripping down my fingers. Okay, so it’s not that hot yet. But it will be!

Maybe it’s that promise of summer holidays that makes it so difficult to work these days. What was once an interesting project, a secure pay cheque and a challenge to get my teeth into, has suddenly become a mean nasty obstacle between me and the great, sunny outdoors. A job is a nuisance when the sun is shining. But then a lack of salary could also be considered quite a major inconvenience… I’d better get back to work.
