Finding Inspiration on a Friday Afternoon

Today, the effort of thinking has been particularly taxing. It's probably because I'm coming down with some bug - it feels like each thought has to drag itself through the muddy swamp that is my brain.

So I took some time out, away from the glare of the computer screen, and had a conversation. It's so good sometimes to leave the immediate needs, that scrawled list marked 'urgent', and spend some time exploring the basic necessities. Why do I do what I do? What message am I trying to convey through my work, and do I really believe that it's a message worth sharing? If my job was more to do with function, details and machines, I might think - who is the beneficiary of this product, and what level of quality would I be proud to offer them?

Personally, I need these kind of chats once in a while, the 'who are we, why do we do what we do, how can we make it not just okay but really, really great?' If you were to talk about motivation, that's what gets me going, without fail.

Step back from the detail, look at the big picture, and get back to work with a bit of perspective.

It might seem like a strange thing to do on a Friday afternoon, but I'm glad I did it!
