Call me Grandma, but...
There’s an article on the BBC website today about manufacturing ‘character’. I found it fascinating. To quote: ‘Certain personal traits - in particular confidence, responsibility and self-control - are becoming more important to an individual's life chances.’
My first thought was… more important? Were confidence, responsibility and self-control not important 20 years ago? Or do we only need to trundle out these characteristics when a specific problem arises?
Elsewhere in the article these ‘life chances’ are described in terms of ‘career chances and future earnings.’ It seems that these characteristics are only desirable in the aim to get a better career and more money.
Now I know, I’m sounding like an old-fashioned whinger. But I will admit, at the tender age of 23, to being a little shocked at this article. I had assumed that developing a good character was a fairly big part of life, along with building meaningful relationships and having a positive impact on the situations we find ourselves in. Am I just completely behind the times?
