I like words

Today is National Poetry Day. I like poems, so I thought I’d check it out. Using a famous internet search engine, I went hunting for events and websites relating to this celebration, and discovered that there is a whole world out there that seems to be making the most of this occasion, from poetry workshops to live performances, to arty film/poetry viewings. ‘Cool’, I thought, in my wonderfully wordsmithical way. Then, on my internet travels, I stumbled upon something else… Book crossing. ‘Even cooler,’ I thought.

I love reading and I love adventures, so this really caught my attention. The idea is that you leave a book somewhere, like in a coffee shop or on the train, and write on the website that you’ve ‘released your book into the wild’, leaving someone else to catch it, read it, and pass it on. Simple but genius. I love the idea of these sneaky books lying around, waiting to be picked up and read by passers by.

There’s something about poetry and wild books that makes me feel a little more awake. It’s pure leisure. Reading poetry won’t help me to pay my bills and won’t get the washing done. But it’s worth doing. It reminds me that life is more than mundane, that there is much to be gained from little moments of luxury. Cool, huh?
