Petrol money is precious

I recently moved away from the city I’d been living in for four years. I still work there, and I realised today that it costs me a fiver in petrol every day to get to work and back. That’s fine. However, a lot of my friends, a.k.a. the remainder of my social life, still live in the city. So if I want to meet up with them in the evening, it means another 40 mile / five pound round trip.

Now I’ve known this since I moved, and so I try to be sensible, going straight from work to see friends as a kind of detour on the way home. But until I’d worked out the actual cost on the little calculator on my mobile phone, it hadn’t really sunk in. It’s like there’s a little hovering thought at the back of my mind telling me it all adds up, but until I see the actual figures, it doesn’t have any real impact.

Now that it’s got through to my brain, the decision about how to use my petrol comes down to my priorities. What’s important to me? Keeping in touch with my friends is a biggie. Maybe I’ll do shopping, tax stuff and other chores online, and use my petrol money to spend time with my mates. Maybe I could do work online… hmm.
