All I want for Christmas...
My method for buying Christmas presents might seem a little odd. Sometimes I’ll just buy something that looks nice, that does the job. My sisters tend to give specific lists, so for them I’ll pick something I can afford, knowing they’ll get what they wanted.
But for some people, I find myself thinking; what does this person need? What do I really want to give them? Often I realise that something expensive from a shop won’t cut it. Perhaps what’s needed is a note with the present, a few lines to tell them what they mean to me, to encourage them. I’d like to give an invitation to dinner in the New Year, or some music that I know they’ll appreciate.
I really want to give an old friend a phone call, to catch up with their news. I have another friend for whom Christmas is unlikely to be merry or bright. I want to give her a big hug, and do anything I can to make it better. I want to give my Mum a hand cleaning up after Christmas dinner. I want to visit my grandparents, and spend an afternoon with them. I think it’s more important than a pot of marmalade, or another navy blue tie.
