When life interrupts

We all have times in our lives when the pressure seems to be piling up. We’re working overtime (paid or unpaid!) just to get everything done. We’re busy juggling all the different pieces of our lives, and we can only just hold it all together. Maybe we’re pursuing relationships, or business prospects, or we’re cramming for exams. It feels like we are indispensable, deadlines are crucial, and every moment counts.

Suddenly, life comes crashing in and stops us in our tracks. Whether it’s a family bereavement, a broken leg, a broken down car or even just a bad cold, we are forced to concede control. Forces beyond our influence have broken in, and we simply can’t continue as we were. Some of these moments can be tragic, and often, the break in our schedules will mean we miss out on something we wanted. But there’s also a positive element to these moments, and sometimes we don’t stop long enough to understand it.

In all the busy-ness of life, we can forget what really matters – the things that aren’t urgent, but are still important. Things like family, relationships, and rest. Hopefully, these moments of crisis will remind us that there is more to life than deadlines and progress. We might be forced to stop just long enough to take a look around and remember what we were doing before things got so busy. Perhaps we’ll even feel grateful. Who knows.
