Christmas is coming...

Christmas is coming and the goose is getting... panicky. Along with everybody else. Standing in the post office or walking around the office at work, I pick up snatches of the same conversation... have you done your shopping yet? It's an extra deadline on top of everything else, and nationwide, people are fretting.

Every precious free minute is filled with thoughts of how to fit everything in... presents, food shopping, travel arrangements, Christmas cards, decorating... the list is endless. Whilst all of these things could be the recipe for a fun, festive week of leisure, when they are crammed into a few hours after a long working day, or a saturday you'd rather spend on the sofa, they tend to lose their appeal.

And why is it that just as I have need to spend a shopping day in the city centre, it becomes a place of torture? No matter when you venture out, it's going to be crowded. The queues are huge and tinny Xmas jingles add to the heavily perfumed atmostphere of the department stores. I'm almost tempted to grab a ridiculous stuffed santa toy in a ceramic reindeer mug and buy it for my mum just so I can escape the madness and go home for a cup of tea!

I'm looking forward to Christmas... seeing my family, stuffing my face with yummy food, drinking wine every night without guilt and watching old films in front of the fire. I just wish I could skip the build up! Maybe I should go on holiday until the holiday season begins.
