The Big Lunch

Ever heard of ‘The Big Lunch’? No, it’s not a six-course meal that will have you snoozing by 3pm. It’s a national initiative from the Eden Project.

The basic idea is that people get together to eat together and have fun together, and to make it easy to do, we all do it on 19 July. I think it’s a very cool idea. Clusters of people all over the country sharing food they have grown and made themselves, closing off the streets, getting messy with art, pets and small children, and generally having fun.

Paul Twivy, co-founder of The Big Lunch, said this: “10 million of us every day are going onto social networking websites and chatting to (or texting) people across the world, but most of us don’t know our neighbours.”

The thing is that people tend to be shy, and even if they aren’t, there seems to be an unwritten rule that you don’t talk to strangers unless you have to. So it’s a bit of a bold move, getting people to look up from the ground, say hi, and ask if there are any tuna sandwiches left. But who knows where it could lead! I applaud the good people at the Eden Project, and I encourage you to check out the website at www.thebiglunch.com and join in.
