Secret Millionaire
You might remember Liz Jackson, who did an interview with Looking at Life last year. If you don't remember, you can read the fascinating interview here.
Liz is blind. She set up her own business in telecommunications. She is a remarkable woman with fantastic stores of perseverance, bravery and innovation. Her interview inspired me because she took risk after risk, and it paid off.
Why am I harping on about Liz? Because she is the subject of the TV programme The Secret Millionaire tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm.
The papers are saying the programme highlights one of the first millionaires with a social conscience. I haven't seen the programme before, but I'll be watching it tonight. As far as I can tell, the idea is that a millionaire goes 'undercover' to an area where there is lots of need, and experiences what life is like for people who have next to nothing. At the end of the programme they decide to donate money towards a work they have seen in action, to make life better for the people they have met.
I think we all need to have our eyes opened for us from time to time, and tonight I'm sure mine will be opened wider from the comfort of my sofa. Who knows, maybe I'll even be prompted to do something about it.
