Bring it on winter!

I have to confess, I haven’t appreciated the recent mix of rainy days and dark evenings. Shoving my cold hands deep into my coat pockets on the way home from work last night, winter seemed to stretch out before me like a long grey tunnel. But today, everything is different.

That’s because today is Guy Fawkes day. It’s one of my favourite events of the year, because despite my daily masquerade as an adult, I’m actually still a small child. I get VERY excited about fireworks. I love the lights and sounds and smells. I also love the way that, due to some unspoken but universally understood signal, everyone comes out wearing coats, gloves, hats and scarves on bonfire night. It’s like a communal agreement we silently express through our outer garments: ‘It’s time’.

Yesterday, I felt that winter had crept up without me noticing, and certainly without my permission. But tonight, I’ll be ready for it. Yes, it’s cold and dark, but I’ll wrap up warm, go outside, and celebrate with loud noises and flashes of light. I know it’s probably all in my head, but that’s okay. If making circles with a sparkler is what it takes to put me in a positive mood about the coming months, then that’s just what I’ll have to do. It’s tough, gruelling even, but hey, someone’s got to do it.
