Put your feet up, mum
I’m really looking forward to Christmas this year. My parents are moving out of the family home in the New Year, so it’s the last time we’ll celebrate Christmas in the familiar old way we’ve come to love. But even so, I expect that this year, things will be quite different. As my mum is due for an operation soon, she won’t be fulfilling her usual role of doing a million things at once while maintaining her cheery hostess smile. Instead, my four siblings and I will be sharing out the tasks.
I’m fortunate to have parents who are still together, still in love, and still happy to play host to a load of 20-somethings who don’t act their age (we only stopped having stockings a couple of years ago). This year, as responsibilities shift and my mum lies on the sofa with a glass of mulled wine (if we can tie her down!) while we bustle about with cooking and wrapping and sorting out pets and washing up and making beds, I’ll appreciate my parents all the more for the effort they have put in over the last umpteen Christmases… and the years in between.
