Musings on marriage

Marriage is a funny thing. It’s a relationship between two people, and since every person is different, so is every couple. The word ‘marriage’ can describe a relationship that is altered beyond recognition from one house to the next in a single street.

In one house it’s a strong bond, the backbone of a family, a relationship of love and delight. Next door, it’s simply a framework, a situation in which two people live, but a relationship marked by indifference. In another house, marriage is filled with stress, hurt and heartache. In a house across the road, it’s just a memory, a word used in the past tense. And in the next house down, it’s something precious but broken, and the couple is trying desperately to make it work again.

Last night I saw an advert on TV for a new programme, ‘The British Family’. The BBC website says: “Kirsty Young tells the story of the British family from the end of the Second World War to the present day.” The first episode is on Marriage, and it’s on Monday at 9pm on BBC 2. I’m intrigued.

By the way, if you are married, you might be interested in the useful collection of articles and resources on the Care for the Family website.
