Counting my lucky stars

This week I’ve been working hard. Things have been busy, pressure is on, and I’m fighting off a cold. But come 6 o’clock when I walk through the door, I live a life of luxury. I have a comfy sofa, a TV, a kettle and a fridge full of food. I have no kids or dog or extra work that I need to do at home. In fact, I’ve watched '80s films on TV every night this week, and I’ve felt incredibly lazy… and then instantly guilty.

But I'm trying not to fall into my old trap of feeling guilty about having free time. I used to be super busy, filling every minute doing something useful or helpful. While I was a student, I was also leading a project, volunteering a day a week for a charity and most evenings for other things, and basically running myself into the ground.

A few years on, I try to appreciate the easy times when they visit me. It won’t always be like this. It won’t be long before I join the proper grown up world and every minute is filled with work, kids, pets, housework, and all the extra stuff that’s bound to happen. But these days, I sit on my sofa with dinner, a beer, my husband and a corny film, and I count my blessings and my lucky stars.
